The Scottish GT's

You may recall that we have featured some of the Scottish GT’s on this site on earlier pages.

This was my old GT.

We have now been able to track down this car’s VIN, and from there, through the GT Historian, we can now list some of the options fitted.

Burnt Orange car with Walnut Glow paintouts; Saddle cloth interior; power steering; laminated windscreen; brown vinyl roof; electric windows; left hand door mirror; rear demister; Sports Road wheels; and Export Pack. The car was an automatic.

The car was also one of the six June, 1974 UK cars.

The car was first registered on 18th May, 1976, and last registered in 1984. It has disappeared.

Edit: actually, it did not quite disappear as this photo shows. I owned the car from August, 1982 until approximately July, 1984. I got this photo of my old car at taken at York Dragway from the later mid 1980’s showing some of the less subtle, but common modifications these cars seem to acquire. The eighties have as much to answer for as the seventies.

This is John’s car.

This car is also a Burnt Orange car with a brown cloth interior and brown vinyl roof;

power steering; laminated windscreen; electric windows; left hand door mirror; rear demister; Sports Road wheels; and Export Pack. The car was an automatic.

It is one of the seventeen March, 1974 XB GT’s exported to the UK.

This car still exists in Scotland, and is under restoration.

This was Crawfy’s old GT.

We have also been able to get information about this car from its VIN. It was Sky View Blue with a Parchment interior; power steering; laminated windscreen; electric windows; left hand door mirror; rear demister; Sports Road wheels; and Export Pack

Although Crawfy saw the car when it was Sky View Blue, when he bought it it was already painted red.

This car is one of the seventeen March, 1974 export XB GT’s and, in fact, its VIN is only two digits different from John’s car above.

This car was registered on 18th May, 1976, the same day as mine.

The XA and XB GT’s exported to the UK

Through the kind efforts of the Ford Archive historian, and the Falcon GT Club of Autralia’s historian, we now have more information regarding the export of XA and XB GT’s to the UK. It makes interesting reading.

Note: all of the UK XA and XB GT’s were well optioned.

Every one had power steering (Option 06), electric windows (Option 46)and the sports road wheels (Option 52).

All had the left hand side mirror (Option 61).

All the XA’s had the blackout bonnet (Option 55) and all the XB’s had the tutone bonnet (Option 55). The colour of the tutone bonnet would vary depending on the base colour of the car; black, brown, or silver.

All the XB’s had laminated windscreens (Option 11) and heated rear windows (Option 95).

All of the XA’s, bar the four door, had front (Option 82) and rear (Option 81) spoilers.

All of the XA’s, including the four door, had vinyl roofs:- black vinyl roof (Option 16),  blue vinyl roof (Option 78)

The XB’s fitted with vinyl roofs were:- black vinyl roof (Option 16), brown vinyl roof (Option 17), blue vinyl roof (Option 78).

The heavily optioned XA also had:- sunroof (Option 10), laminated windscreen (Option 11), and tinted side and rear glass (Option 87).

The cloth interior cars had cloth inserts in the centre of each seat base and seat back.

Back to the sorry Scottish tale.

Sadly, Crawfy’s old car is one of the ‘Rusty Scottish’ Falcons, the closer car.

Here are photos Crawfy has of his car in happier times. .

The rear car belonged to Jim from Glasgow. It was originally Polar White with a black vinyl roof, and a black cloth interior. Somewhere, along the line, it acquired a white interior.

Jim also painted the car red, and fitted fibreglass bumpes and bonnet with scoop.

Crawfy and Jim took their cars to York Dragway for some strip action.

But, as we have mentioned before, it all ended sadly. These two cars, plus another, were bought by the owner of a race driving school, and after a short period of promotional work, they were parked up - the above two outside, and the third inside a garage.

From the photos below, we can see the gradual decline and dis-integration of the cars, first Crawfy’s:-

A few years further on.

And Jim’s car:-

All three of us knew where these two cars went, and watched in sorrow as they got worse and worse in condition, until, they moved from where they were sitting as the owner moved to new premises.

The End.

When Crawfy’s car was being moved, it snapped in two at the bulkhead.

The day after these photos were taken, the cars were scrapped.

You may recall that the owner of these two cars had a third XB GT, stored in a garage near where these cars used to live. When these cars were moved, the ‘good’ one did too. Sadly we have learned that the wooden shed where this car was stored, next to where the cars above were disposed of, was burned down by vandals. So, one owner in Scotland owned three XB GT’s, and all have been destroyed. Shame.

A couple of XA’s that also ended up in Scotland
